Mandatory Standard for Furniture Safety

New Australian Government Mandatory Information
Standard for Furniture Safety

On 3 May 2024, a new mandatory information standard was introduced to enhance safety and reduce the risk of injury and fatalities caused by toppling furniture. This regulation is designed to protect families, particularly young children, from serious accidents associated with unstable furniture.

Key Compliance Requirements

From 4 May 2025, certain furniture products must comply with the new standard. Suppliers must ensure the following:

  • Permanent Warning Labels: Furniture must have clear and durable labels warning about the risk of tipping.

  • Point-of-Sale Warnings: Retailers must display visible warnings in-store and online.

  • Instruction Manual Information: Manuals must include safety guidance on the dangers of furniture tip-over incidents.

Safety Precautions for Consumers

To minimise risks associated with unstable furniture, consumers are advised to follow these critical safety measures:

  • Always secure furniture with an anchor device.

  • Never allow children to stand, climb, or hang on drawers, doors, or shelves.

  • Never open more than one drawer at a time.

  • Place heavy items on lower shelves or drawers to maintain stability.
